  • iOS Apps vorweg zu schliessen kann der Akkulaufzeit schaden

    Bis heute morgen war ich der Ansicht, es sei das beste für den iPhone-Akku meine Apps in kurzen, regelmässigen Abständen zu schliessen. Ich habe immer gedacht, dass Multitasking, sprich die im Hintergrund geöffneten Apps, die Akkulaufzeit negativ beeinflussen. Nun habe ich heute Morgen aber einen sehr interessanten Artikel auf lifehacker.com gelesen. Der ehemalige Apple Genius Bar Techniker Scotty Loveless erklärt in seinem Blog einleuchtend, war es besser ist Apps nicht aus der Multitasking-Leiste zu entfernen:

    Yes, it does shut down the app, but what you don’t know is that you are actually making your battery life worse if you do this on a regular basis. Let me tell you why.

    By closing the app, you take the app out of the phone’s RAM . While you think this may be what you want to do, it’s not. When you open that same app again the next time you need it, your device has to load it back into memory all over again. All of that loading and unloading puts more stress on your device than just leaving it alone. Plus, iOS closes apps automatically as it needs more memory, so you’re doing something your device is already doing for you. You are meant to be the user of your device, not the janitor.

    The truth is, those apps in your multitasking menu are not running in the background at all: iOS freezes them where you last left the app so that it’s ready to go if you go back. Unless you have enabled Background App Refresh, your apps are not allowed to run in the background unless they are playing music, using location services, recording audio, or the sneakiest of them all: checking for incoming VOIP calls , like Skype. All of these exceptions, besides the latter, will put an icon next to your battery icon to alert you it is running in the background.

    In kompletten Beitrag «The Ultimate Guide to Solving iOS Battery Drain» finden sich noch diverse weitere gute Tipps wie ihr die Batterielaufzeit eures iOS Devices verlängern könnt. Natürlich dürfen unter den Tipps Klassiker wie «Schalte die Ortungsdienste und Hintergrundaktualisierung aus» und «Deaktiviere Push-Nachrichten» nicht fehlen. Einen anderen etwas unorthodoxen Tipp habe ich aber hier zum ersten Mal gelesen: «Schalte die Batterie-Anzeige in Prozent ab» Aus seiner Erfahrung als Apple Genius weiss Loveless, dass Leute die Batterieanzeige auf Prozent eingestellt haben, ihr iPhone öfter anschalten um nachzuschauen wie viel Akku noch übrig ist und wie viel in den letzten XY Minuten verbraucht wurde. Dies führt dann natürlich dazu, dass mehr Akku verbraucht wird als wenn man auf die Prozent-Anzeige verzichtet.

    Ich nehme mir den Tipp mit der Prozent-Anzeige (und natürlich auch die anderen) nun mal zu Herzen und teste wie viel ich noch rausholen kann aus meinem iPhone Akku.

  • Magic Mouse, kleiner Testbericht

    Ich hatte soeben die Macig Mouse in, respektive unter meiner Hand. Leider durfte ich sie noch nicht kaufen (die Preisschilder waren schon an einem leeren Regal platziert), das werde ich jedoch nachholen sobald sie im Handel erhältlich ist. Die Maus liegt meines Erachtens gut in der Hand obwohl sie dermassen flach ist. Sie gleitet wegen der speziellen Beschichtung der Unterseite extrem schnell über den Tisch UND sie sieht richtig cool aus.

    An die Bedienung wird man sich mit Sicherheit gewöhnen müssen, aber das wird schnell gehen bis man es sich nicht mehr vorstellen kann mit einer „alten“ Maus zu arbeiten. Zumal Apple User die Bewegungen ja vom MacBook (Pro), dem iPhone oder dem iPod Touch schon kennen.

    Laut Apfelblog und Macworld UK wurden die ersten Kontingente verpackt in in Läden gesichtet (Bild). Über das genaue Verkaufsdatum wir noch wild spekuliert. Ich werde wohl mal im Apple Store an der Zürcher Bahnhofstrasse vorbei schauen nächste Woche, die dürften ziemlich sicher zu den ersten gehören welche die Mäuse in den Verkauf bringen können.

  • iPhone OS3 | Internet-Tethering im Test

    iPhone Internet-Thetering

    Ich habe heute zum ersten Mal die neue Funktion Internet-Tethering des OS3 ausprobiert. Ich muss schon sagen, ich bin sehr positiv überrascht! Zwischen Luzern und Zürich ist die Verbindung nur zwei Mal abgebrochen und die Geschwindigkeit ist auch sehr zufriedenstellend. Mit etwas Geduld lassen sich so auch YouTube Filmchen anschauen.

    Meines Erachtens macht diese Funktion die Internet-Everyware Angebote der grossen Telco-Anbieter überflüssig. Mal schauen wie sich das ganze entwickelt. Es funktioniert meines Wissens im Moment ja erst bei Orange.

    Ha, knapp 11 und 10 Minuten Stunden dauert es, bis das neue OS fürs iPhone erhältlich ist (soviel ich weiss soll es um 09.00 Uhr erhältlich sein…). Mit dem Update kommen diverse Verbesserungen, am meisten freie ich mich allerdings auf Copy/Paste. Auch endlich MMS senden und empfangen zu können finde ich ganz chic. Nicht, dass ich das wirklich vermisst habe seit ich mein iPhone habe. Nein, deswegen wurde man einfach immer belächelt – weil jedes Handy kann das doch – oder? Nein, eben nicht…zumindest bis morgen.

    Ein Update ist doch sowieso etwas schönes! Ich war es mich ja seit jeher gewohnt, dass von zeit zu Zeit Windowsupdates installiert werden müssen. Ich empfand das immer als lästig und die Verbesserungen waren (meist) nicht sicht- oder spürbar. Seit ich mich aber zu den Mac-Jüngern zähle, hat sich das geändert. Ich freue mich über jedes Update! Denn bei Apple sehe ich wirklich, dass sich was verbessert und meist kommen neue Funktionen dazu. Das ist beim iPhone nicht anders als beim OSX.

    Jene Neuerungen welche ich besonders gut finde habe ich mal fett markiert.

    Wer sich jetzt fragt, ob er beim 3G bleiben soll oder ob er sich das 3G S anschaffen will, sollte es sich einmal den Artikel beim Apfelblog anschauen.

    Ich werde ziemlich sicher noch einige Zeit beim 3G bleiben – es sei denn etwas unvorhergesehenes passiert… 😉

  • Rettet die Apfel-Taste

    Als part-time-apple-aner habe ich mit Entsetzen mitbekommen, dass die Apfel Taste auf den neuen Tastaturen nicht mehr vertreten sein wird!

    Was genau der Gedanke hinter dieser Änderung ist kann ich nicht nachvollziehen und laut spiegelonline.de hat Apple auf Ihre Anfrage keinen Kommentar abgegeben.

    Nun machen sich die Blogger auf der ganzen Welt für eine der erfolgreichsten Tasten der Computergeschichte stark. Eine Petition unter apfeltaste.wordpress.com soll das Logo zurückbringen. Wie lange es wohl dauert, bis die erste Million Kommentare gepostet wurden…?
